Ikon is a leading contemporary art gallery based in Birmingham. The original bookshop was a similar design to when the building was converted in 1997 so required modernisation and accessibility improvements.

Following an initial feasibility by Howells, we developed an adaptable design reflecting the original material palette of the gallery. We salvaged much of the original fabric and some materials were retained by the gallery for future exhibitions, meaning the project had no need for any skips.

We worked closely with MJM Bespoke, a local fabrication studio to ensure the design was fit for purpose and within the strict funding budget.

The system has been designed to be adaptable and repairable in future, ensuring the longevity for the investment. Individual panels can be replaced when needed for repair and maintenance, or to update the aesthetic.

“Sculpt’s enthusiasm, resourcefulness and unwavering professionalism, alongside their smart and budget-respecting flair for excellent furniture and interior design – were fundamental in ensuring both a smooth, stress-free development process and the highly successful realisation of our gallery shop refurbishment project.

From thoroughly understanding the sustainability and aesthetically oriented brief, to leading on planning permissions, problem solving design solutions and procurement – including contractor selection, works specifications and management – Sculpt repeatedly demonstrated not just how valuable but essential their expertise and experience was to the success of our project which was delivered on time and on budget.”
