There a a few things we consider when designing interiors, besides our commitments to sustainability and social value we also want to create quality designs that last. Quality can mean different things to different people so I wanted to highlight what it means for us at Sculpt, and how we deliver this for our clients.
For us, quality doesn’t mean expensive or fancy, it simply means it’s well thought out, the specifications are right for the job and will stand up to the rigour of the end users. This is how we are thoughtful interior designers. There are a few key points we consider in any specification:
Resilience
Is the material up to the job? In high traffic areas and touchpoints we’d specify something more robust than a ceiling finish. If it looks tired after 2 weeks of use then it’s not right for the job.
Maintenance
If it does get damaged can the material be refinished, sanded down or repaired easily without needing a highly trained specialist? This usually steers us towards solid material over laminates for instance.
Look & Feel
It has to look great of course, so we want the material to give a sense of quality as well as having the thought behind the scenes.
Junctions
Where materials meet, how do they intersect, does it need a capping or trim detail to protect it? How can we remove a section if it needs to be repaired or replaced?
Prototypes
When we’re not sure how something could work or a client isn’t totally convinced, we will prototype it. We’ve made whole desks before to test how they feel when sat at, and left materials outside in the sun and rain for a whole year to check they stand up to the British elements.
