When we specify materials, fixtures or equipment we don’t just chose based on how it looks, we also want to make sure it’s a good investment for our client. Mostly this is about longevity.
Particularly in commercial projects we need to use hard wearing specs. People will never take as much care in an office, shop or cafe than they would in their own home. There’s also a lot more people using the space. It’s inevitable that things will get a bit bashed from time to time.
We can either design with harder, stronger materials which will work but would end up making the place look a little apocalyptic. Alternatively we can use good quality, honest materials that take the weathering well or are easy to maintain:
- A timber effect laminate will blow and peel if it gets damaged, whereas solid timber can be refinished and almost seamlessly repaired.
- Solid surfaces like Corian and HIMACS can be repaired and refinished.
- Valchromat is a through-colour MDF which can take small dents and nicks unlike traditional MDF. It’s also made without using formaldehyde which is a nice bonus.
- A ‘real’ terrazzo will weather better than a printed tile version, like this great product from Solus.
- Leather will develop a patina over time which provides a protective layer, the more it’s used the better it looks. Check out Bill Amberg Studio for some fantastic leather projects.
- Solid stainless steel will last a lot longer than a chrome finished product (specifically for taps).
This approach is inherently more sustainable, reduces maintenance issues, keeps the place looking great and in the long run saves costs.
