Explicit Clarity

I wanted to share some insight into one of our core values here at Sculpt, one of the mantras we use most days: explicit clarity.

Every line on our drawings is something that has to be fabricated, bought or built. Even the smallest misunderstandings can have an impact on cost, timelines and the quality of the final outcome.

This is where explicit clarity comes into play.

Spell it out

Our world is often downing in acronyms. Some people might know what a PPCPFC or DSSO is, but this isn’t always clear. It just needs someone to interpret it differently and a big mistake could be made on site which then needs to be corrected, causing delays and straining the relationship between designer, client and contractor.

Because of our attention to explicit clarity, we won’t leave things to chance, we literally spell it out. Only a few extra seconds of typing can save a world of hassle.

Communicate

We don’t mind saying ‘sorry if this is a silly question’ but I’d rather we were the ones with silly questions than silly mistakes. We go to extreme lengths to make sure we understand and the discussion is really clear. We often need to translate conversations between the professional team to the client and this takes understanding and clarity.

Colourful isn’t always helpful

A big one for us is the use of colour on plans. Often colours can look different on different screens or when printed and we don’t want to run the risk of things being misinterpreted so we have instead build a coding system to make sure things are really clear. Not only that but some people will actually see colours differently, so we have to be mindful of making things as easy as possible for anyone who needs to read our drawings.
